![]() The Lion in Winter a play by James Goldman March 2, 3, 9-11, 15-18, 2007 It is Christmastime at the Royal Court of Chinon; the year is 1183. The aging King Henry II rules over the British Empire; his wife, the powerful and domineering Eleanor of Aquitane is locked up far away in the countryside. Their son, the heir to the English throne, has died and the crown is up for grabs with three of their children fighting viciously. Add to the mix the young newly-crowned King of France who wants to exchange his beautiful older sister's dowry for more territory. The only problem is that his sister has become Henry's mistress and shows no interest in marrying any of his children. This is the basic premise of James Goldman's now-famous 1964 play The Lion in Winter. A vicious, dark and dramatic comedy, it tells a twist-filled, compelling and entertaining story in which everyone's motives are suspect.
